I'll get right to the point. What does the average user do on their PC every day? - They browse the internetz (The news, Facebook, YouTube, E-mail, porn) - They write letters and/or essays - They go pirate-mode and download movies and music - They watch those movies and listen to the music they downloaded - They chat with their friends on MSN (or AIM, ICQ, Google Talk, Gadu-Gadu, Xfire etc) Hmm, sounds a bit like YOU. Why stick with the crappy stuff, while there's something BETTER and FREE? How about: - A better webbrowser, faster and more secure than your Internet Explorer or Safari? - A free office suite for all your letters, essays, databases, spreadsheets, presentations and math stuff? - A pre-installed full-featured Bittorent client for all your pirate needs? - Never having to install codecs again to watch your favourite movies or listen to your favourite music? - One program that allows you to talk to all of your friends on different services without having to install 3 different programs? - Never having to Google for the software you need again and install FREE open source software from a full-featured software centre featuring thousands of free software? - Never worrying about viruses again, and never paying for a license again, or tiring yourself with cracking trial versions? - You deciding how you control your computer? - Never being forced to restart your computer again after installing updates? - A faster computer? - A user-friendly desktop environment? - Paying absolutely nothing? How about... Linux? Life is shitty enough, so your computer shouldn't make it even more shittier. Reboot your life with Linux, choose the distribution that suits your needs: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Meet the cast: Ubuntu - Hi there! My name is Ubuntu. I understand you have other priorities than understanding how a computer works, that's why I am here for you. With me you won't have to learn how to use a computer. Whatever you need to do, I'll make sure you get it done without being in your way. Linux Mint - Hey, nice to meet you! I am Linux Mint. I am a proud clean full-featured operating system just for you. With me you'll never have to look for codecs again, because I simply love music and videos! I also have Flash installed for your convenience! Come on, let's watch something on YouTube together! Debian - Hello! I am Debian, and I simply can't stand software that crashes or freezes. That's why my software packages and updates are thoroughly tested before I deliver them to you. I value your data, that's why I am a secure operating system! I am a universal OS, for every use! Wether it be all-day use, educational use, or programming! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There are many more distributions for you to choose from, but if you're new to Linux, I recommend one of the above. With Linux, you decide the flavour of your desktop environment: You decide how you control your desktop. Let's take a look! Gnome 3 - Hey! I am Gnome 3, and my goal is to let you control your computer without having to think. I am new, refreshing, and easy to use for the everyday user. Want to see a picture of me? This is me showing my menu when you click the Activities button in the top-left corner! http://i1-news.softpedia-static.com/images/extra/LINUX/large/gnome3tutorial-large_006.jpg Gnome 2 - Hello, nice to meet you! I am Gnome 2, Gnome 3's older brother. I keep things clear and simple. I've got three main navigation buttons: Applications, Places and System. My installed applications are nicely organized into categories, so you can quickly find your way to the application you need. This is what I look like: https://files.catbox.moe/xpw4dh.png K Desktop Environment - Hey! You can call me KDE. I think you should be in control, that's why I am very advanced and tweakable. You can change just about anything about me! The way I work, the way I react, the way I look, unleash your creative mind on me! I am also widely used in Enterprise distributions, so I guess I am kinda the professional, haha. Oh right, here I am! https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/75/KDE_Plasma_Desktop_4.9.png LXDE - Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment, that's me! I like to keep things simple. I have a taskbar and a button in the lower left corner like you're probably used to. With my applications nicely organized into categories, you can quickly navigate to what you're looking for. See how simple I am: http://www.internetling.com/wp-content/gallery/lxde024/2009-07-28-174211_1280x1024_scrot.png Unity - Hi, Unity is my name! I am a new way of using your system! You'll find me on Ubuntu. I help new or inexperienced users to just use their pc instead of figuring out how it works! I am different, and also eyecandy to my users! Here I am! http://www.gratissoftwaresite.nl/userfiles/unity.png Don't worry if you can't be bothered choosing a desktop environment. A default desktop environment will be installed when you install a distribution on your system: - Ubuntu comes with Unity - Linux Mint comes with Gnome 3 - Debian comes with Gnome 2 Of course if you desire a different desktop environment for your system, you can easily install them, and switch between desktop environments! No problem. I've heard this a lot: "But Windows works just fine!" Let me tell you the short story of a friend who saw just fine without glasses. Both eyes are about -1 dpt, but he wasn't bothered by it. Good enough, he said. Then he got glasses, a whole new world opened before his eyes. He said: "When I watched Monsters Inc., I could actually see the individual hairs of that big blue monster!" He also didn't have any headaches anymore while he was driving. He was now able to see the world as it is and can do that without having headaches. If it can be improved, improve it. Everything you do with your computer in daily life can be done with Linux. For graphical designers, webdevelopers and audio producers is there even a distribution called Ubuntu Studio! Get started now! Are you totally going to renew your experience with Ubuntu? http://ubuntu.com/ Ready to go ARRRRR and enjoy everyday life on your pc with your favourite music and videos with Linux Mint? http://linuxmint.com/ Debian is ready when you are, to do what you want to do without being violently interrupted! http://debian.org/ For gamers: Valve is working on a Steam client for Linux! In fact, L4D2 is already running natively on Ubuntu! Check Refalm's topic for more info: https://www.mucosmos.nl/threads/415
I'll get right to the point. I don't see any reason to switch over to Linux. Everything is running smoothly on Windows 7.
I have read it. It's just that everything I need is working fine so don't see why I should switch to Linux.
Then you haven't read the story about my friend. Albert Heijn Pilsener is fine, but why choose budget if you can get Grolsch? Or whatever other brand. Same applies to this.
Fedora Hi, I am Fedora. I like to be on the leading edge of new technologies and therefore usually one step ahead of the rest. I'm flexible so if you wish to have two or three desktop environments no problem just select them ad install or in the software manager and at login you can choose which one you wish to use to today.
Fedora is better than Debian, except for the lack of packages like codecs and games. A lot of people at school are excited about Arch Linux, however, the installer of it is really advanced and sometimes confusing. I can't use Linux on my laptop. It's got a hyvrid videocard. It's Intel HD Graphics and GeForce 310. Linux only picks up the inboard Intel crap, and can't use the GeForce. On my old laptop I used Linux Mint 10 with Wine, which worked fairly well. I absolutely hate using Windows, it's a bloated piece of shit that gets slower day by day, because of no package manager. Windows 8 will have a package manager with 3rd party support, but the Metro interface is hell on a desktop, so I guess I'm stuck with Windows 7. I hope hybrid graphics are supported soon, because I hate Windows. I don't go to Starbucks, and the only photo editing I do is in Paint (or KolourPaint in Linux), so a Mac is also not an option.
Im stuck with windows xp once, only thing i can update is to windows 7, i've TRIED to update Linux. it failed because im using geforce, So i just got stuck with windows 7.
LOL, how about not trying Mandriva? They are going bankrupt in a few months, so there won't be any support beyond next year.
NICE! I was browsing distrowatch.com, and I found out about the release of a fairly new distribution: ROSA! ROSA is a Mandriva fork made by the Russian Konstantin Kochereshkin (afaik). It is focussed on enterprise applications, but should work for the home user aswell. I have yet to try it, but it looks promising. http://rosalinux.com/
If anyone is considering Fedora, I wouldn't do it. They've gone completely insane. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=958608 "it's not a bug, it's a feature"
Or get Red Star linux, bringing the glory of the workers party of the peoples republic into the 21st century... Along with special software that puts the name of the Dear leaders in bold, so you will never forget to properly respect the dear leaders ever again!
I just read about it and about the "internet" in North Korea. Really. The government is fucking retarded. I hereby North Korea the country with the most retarded government ever. For your amusement: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_in_North_Korea
This is the perfect Linux distribution for nay-sayers and those unwilling to expand their world with a new operating system: Doudou Linux
